Weather and Politics

05.30.06

Google offers the ability to chart how often users search using a particular key word. This service is called Google Trends. One of the most interesting things to do with the service is to compare which keywords are being search more than others. For example, are users more interested in searching on Google for weather or politics?

Google Trends: Weather and Politics

As you can see above, google users are more interested in searching for weather (blue) than they are for politics (red). What does this say about public interest in politics? Well, I’m not really sure, except to say people possibly have more interest in hearing what their meteorologist is forecasting for tomorrow’s weather than what their politicans are promising before the next election. Neither Republicans (red) or Democrats (blue) seems to have an edge over each other:

Also, neither interesting in the Republicans or the Democrats can compare with the public’s interest in the weather (orange). Check out this Google Trend:

Roadmap to the Dream

01.16.06

Let’s not forget how true freedom is won. From Martin Luther King’s I have a Dream (1963) speech:

But there is something that I must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice. In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds. Let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred. We must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline. We must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence. Again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force. The marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the Negro community must not lead us to a distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny. And they have come to realize that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.

Let’s all take the time to get back to the basics. You can start first by turning off that talk radio show on the AM dial you may be listening too and start reading.? For a refresher course on democracy, no better place to start than by clicking here.
