Weather and Politics

05.30.06

Google offers the ability to chart how often users search using a particular key word. This service is called Google Trends. One of the most interesting things to do with the service is to compare which keywords are being search more than others. For example, are users more interested in searching on Google for weather or politics?

Google Trends: Weather and Politics

As you can see above, google users are more interested in searching for weather (blue) than they are for politics (red). What does this say about public interest in politics? Well, I’m not really sure, except to say people possibly have more interest in hearing what their meteorologist is forecasting for tomorrow’s weather than what their politicans are promising before the next election. Neither Republicans (red) or Democrats (blue) seems to have an edge over each other:

Also, neither interesting in the Republicans or the Democrats can compare with the public’s interest in the weather (orange). Check out this Google Trend:

Diego and his Rescue Pack

05.21.06

I’ve talked previously about how much my son loves Dora the Explorer.? He’s now just over 2 1/2 and, although he still watches Dora regularly, Diego definitely takes precedence over Dora.? It must be the ‘boy’ thing and the idea of adventure, all while learning about different animals.? Diego is now the first TV show of choice when we have a morning at home.? I’ve found that I enjoy watching it as well and learn some things that I didn’t know.? I just wish they had more Diego shows available - it seems like the ones on Noggin are somewhat limited so have bought what DVDs are available.? Of course, my son doesn’t ever care if they are repeats!? It’s a winner with him!

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom

05.18.06

My son and I started reading this book regularly about 4 months ago.? He loves the rhythm and rhyme and at the end of the book, I turn out the flap and we sing the alphabet song while I point out the letters.? We went through a phase of about 6 weeks that we read this book every night ? now it?s at least 3 times a week and he is identifying the letters and knows most of the words.? This is certainly one of the more fun books for a toddler and a great learning tool as well!? There’s also a ‘read with me’ DVD that I’m considering.? Highly recommended!!!?

From the publisher:? A told B, and B told C, “I’ll meet you at the top of the coconut tree.” Countless children and their parents can joyfully recite the familiar words of this beloved alphabet chant. The lively rhymes and cheerful pictures have made Chicka Chicka Boom Boom a modern-day classic. This Read With Me DVD software is filled with learning exercises and games based on the charming story of upper case “adults” rescuing lower case “children.” Helps Teach: Story Comprehension, Main Ideas, Story Settings & Events, Character Traits, Cause & Effect, Compare & Contrast, Vocabulary, Word Definitions, Descriptive Words, Context of Words Within a Story, Phonics Skills, Words that Relate Concepts, And more.

Deception Point by Dan Brown

05.16.06

I recently read this book for my book club.? Being a Dan Brown fan, I didn?t expect to be disappointed; however, I did not expect to be sitting down to read for 2-3 hours in a sitting.? How did I do this with a 2 year old?? I was on a trip to Alaska for work and, after a 10-12 hour work day, didn?t do much else but try to relax.? I ended up staying awake much later than anticipated because I couldn?t put the book down!? I admit the first half was interesting but didn?t ?grab? me to the point of distraction.? However,?around the half way point,?this high action mystery/thriller started getting so intense and moving so fast that even when I finally forced myself to put the book down and turn out the light, I was not relaxed enough to go right to sleep!? Needless to say, I finished a 600+ page book in a week.? A very good read that I would highly recommend!

Learning Drum by LeapFrog

05.13.06

I was in Toys-R-Us the other day and saw a woman with about a 5 month old looking at this drum.? I had forgotten what a long-lived toy this is!? I was given one as a gift when my son was quite young.? We began playing with it before he was 6 months old.? Besides having?fun, it starts teaching?as infant?the principle of cause and effect.? As he got older, it has become more and more of a learning tool while he is having a blast with his choice of playing music, imitating the drum beats that they play, numbers?or letters (there are four different settings the child can set it on).? He is now just over 2 ? and still plays with it quite frequently, sometimes singing along as well!? This toy is a definite for any mom!

TV for Babies

05.12.06

Ok, we are not sure if we like this idea or not. The thought of sitting a baby in front of a TV just scares the crap out of us. Yet, we all know whether it’s Teletubbies, Baby Einstein, or the latest on PBS…your baby as well as ours will likely be watching some TV. We just hope, that parents truly get it…you use the programs to interact with your child and not to baby sit your child.

The new, round-the-clock channel is called BabyFirstTV. For $9.99 a month, it will be available initially by satellite through DirecTV and later through cable TV providers as well.

TV offerings already abound for older toddlers, and a lucrative ? though controversial ? market has developed for baby-oriented videos, attracting the Walt Disney Co. and the makers of Sesame Street, among others. But until now there had been no ongoing TV programming aimed at infants.

“This is the first channel dedicated to babies and their parents ? transforming TV from its original purpose into a way for them to interact,” said Sharon Rechter, BabyFirstTV’s executive vice president for business development and marketing.

“The fact of life is that babies are already watching TV,” she said. “That’s why having BabyFirstTV is so important ? what we want to offer is completely safe, commercial-free and appropriate content.” KDKA.com.

Videos Real Men Watch

05.05.06

With my wife still away on travel for work, my two-and-a-half year old son and I continue to turn our house into the bachelor pad we’ve always wanted. For our Friday movie night we decided to turn it up a notch. Pow! While the wife likes the cute and cuddly shows and fuzzy cute cats..we’re men and we sometimes need to watch shows that only men watch. So what did we watch? A movie about dogs. Not cute cuddly dogs either! No we watch on DVD a story about a BIG RED DOG!

Yep, that right. We watched Clifford’s Really Big Movie. Why is Clifford a real man’s dog? Well while he may like his family, and he may like his friends…there is only one thing that he really needs to make him happy. As long as he has a nice big bowl of Tummy Yummies he’s perfectly happy. Ahhh…finally a movie the boy and I can really get into!

Clifford\'s Really Big Movie
As I mentioned before, these past few weeks have been busier than I had expected. Being a single dad, even for only three weeks, has given me very little time to write some of the father-son stories I wish to tell. While I joke that it’s our time to be bachelors, the truth of the matter is the focus really has been to be the kind of man my son really needs me to be with his Mom away on travel. That man is a Dad who is willing to give up working in the garage or time on the computer and instead sing songs, color in books, or build blocks. In my fortune cookie that came with our chinese food this evening was something very fitting and where I end this post:
